Opportunities For Students
GRADUATE STUDENTS:
Dr. Xu is accepting students for 2023-2024 with research interests in teaching/mentoring, behavioral health (particularly physical activity/sedentary behavior), and/or romantic relationships.
Idaho State University offers both a Doctor of Philosophy in Experimental Psychology as well as a Doctor in Philosophy in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Xu is an Experimental Psychology faculty, however her students may be enrolled in either Experimental or Clinical programs.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTS/VOLUNTEERS:
If you are an ISU undergraduate interested in pursing a graduate career in psychology or a related field, working as a research assistant (RA) can provide experience and opportunities that will help you along this path.
RA Requirements: RAs are expected to contribute between 3-9 hours per week. RAs can be lab members as volunteers or for credit (1-3 credits via PSYC 4483 Special Problems).
RA Responsibilities: RAs assist with the day to day running of the lab including conducting literature reviews, preparing research materials, and managing data. RAs may also work on specific projects, which may involve human subjects interaction and require appropriate training (e.g., CITI).
Lab Meetings: All lab members attend regular meetings. The time of this meeting generally changes each semester to best accommodate lab members’ schedules. In this meeting, we check in with one another, review the progress of various projects in the lab, provide updates on any new procedures, discuss problems and issues related to our research, and have presentations of ongoing lab projects and relevant articles. Additionally, lab members may have additional and more frequent meetings as needed for specific projects.
Qualifications of Successful Applicants: RAs should have completed Introduction to Psychology and have a clear interest in teaching, behavioral health, and/or close relationships, or intersections between these fields. While not required, completion of Research Methods and Statistics courses, as well previous research experience is helpful.
How to Apply: Dr. Xu considers admitting new research assistants and volunteers on an ongoing basis. If you are interested and you are highly motivated to learn about and contribute to all aspects of research (e.g., recruitment of participants, data collection, data entry), feel free to contact Dr. Xu ([email protected]) with a statement indicating why you are interested in working in this lab. Please include a copy of your CV or resume.
